When Is the Right Time to Test a New Marketing Channel?

Every growing business reaches the same point.

Performance starts to level off.

Growth slows.

And someone asks:

"Should we start advertising on another channel?"

Maybe it's TikTok.

Maybe it's LinkedIn.

Maybe it's Pinterest, YouTube or Microsoft Ads.

Testing new channels can absolutely unlock growth.

But timing matters.

The mistake many businesses make is assuming that a new platform will solve a problem that already exists on their current one.

More channels don't automatically mean more growth
One of the biggest misconceptions in marketing is that growth comes from adding more channels.
In reality, most businesses haven't fully unlocked the potential of the channels they're already using.
We've seen businesses spending £5,000–£10,000 a month on Meta while only scratching the surface of what the platform can deliver.
The same applies to Google Ads.
Before expanding, ask yourself:
  • Are we consistently testing new creative?
  • Have we optimised our landing pages?
  • Are we confident in our offer?
  • Are we reaching enough of our target audience?
  • Have performance improvements started to plateau?
If the answer is no, another channel probably isn't the solution.
So when should you expand?
A new channel becomes worth testing when one or more of these things happen.
1. Your existing channels are becoming harder to scale
You've optimised your campaigns.
You've improved your creative.
You've tested your website.
Growth is becoming more incremental.
That's often a good time to diversify.
2. You've built a repeatable acquisition model
You know what good performance looks like.
You understand your numbers.
You can confidently measure success.
That makes testing far less risky.
3. Your audience exists elsewhere
Not every customer spends their time on the same platform.
If your ideal customers are active somewhere you're not, it may be time to explore it.
4. You have the budget to test properly
One of the biggest mistakes is spreading budget too thinly.
Launching a new platform with an insufficient budget rarely produces meaningful results.
Every new channel needs enough investment to gather reliable data.
Test because of strategy, not because of trends
Marketing trends move quickly.
Every few years there's a new "must-have" platform.
The businesses that grow consistently aren't chasing every new opportunity.
They're making deliberate decisions based on where they'll generate the greatest return.
Sometimes that's launching on a new channel.
Sometimes it's doubling down on the one that's already working.
A simple question to ask
Before expanding, ask yourself:
Have we earned the right to test another channel?
If you've exhausted the biggest opportunities in your existing marketing, then expanding makes sense.
If not...
You're often better investing more time and budget into what already works.
Final thoughts
Adding another marketing channel can be an excellent growth strategy.
But it shouldn't be your first instinct.
The strongest businesses maximise the opportunities in front of them before chasing the next one.
Because building a better business isn't about being everywhere.
It's about being effective where it matters most.
